City To Help Host Rescheduled Veterans Summit

Corpus Christi Mayor Henry Garrett will welcome participants to the 2008 Veterans and Military Summit at 9 a.m. Saturday, November 1, 2008 at the American Bank Center, 1901 N. Shoreline Boulevard. The event will be held from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. that day.

The summit was originally to have been held in September of this year but was canceled because of Hurricane Ike. As a result, organizers have rescheduled it for this Saturday. The summit is free and is open to all veterans, active duty military personnel and their dependants.

Among those participating in a wide variety of informational workshops with topics ranging from health care issues to employment, will be representatives from the Department of Veterans Affairs and the State of Texas. In addition, there will be a large number of exhibits featuring agencies that provide services to veterans.The summit will also offer a health fair, job fair, free parking, refreshments and door prizes.

Padre Island Water Line Repairs Completed

The City of Corpus Christi advises Padre Island residents that repairs to a 24-inch transmission water line servicing Padre have been completed. That means island residents may now return to their normal water usage.

The repair work began at 3 p.m. on Thursday, October 9, 2008 and was completed shortly after midnight this morning.

The City thanks residents on the island for their water conservation efforts while the repairs were underway Thursday night. That spirit of cooperation helped ensure that water service on the island was not completely interrupted during the repair effort.

Solid Waste Services Offers Free Residential Construction Debris Disposal & Used Tire Recycling Day

The City of Corpus Christi Streets and Solid Waste Services Department will be offering a Free Residential Construction Debris Disposal and Used Tire Recycling Day on Saturday, October 11, 2008. Residential construction materials and used tires (limit 4 tires) may be disposed free of charge from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Citizens Collection Center.

Where: Citizens Collection Center at the J.C. Elliott Transfer Station,

Time: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Residents (non-commercial) who are Solid Waste Services customers wishing to dispose of construction materials and used tires must present a valid picture ID showing a current City of Corpus Christi address to participate in this one-day free service.

Some Restrictions Apply: No commercial or industrial waste will be accepted free of charge. Contractors and commercial vehicles may pay the normal landfill gate fees to dispose of their items on this date.

City Council Selects Five Candidates To Interview For City Manager Position

The Corpus Christi City Council met in executive session today, Tuesday, October 7, 2008 to determine the slate of City Manager candidates to be interviewed on Tuesday, October 28, 2008. Arcus Consulting had over 100 applicants for the City Manager position with 65 meeting minimum qualification requirements, out of which five were chosen for interviews. Currently, the slate of candidates includes:

Pamela Brangaccio - Over 25 years of government service and is currently consulting for the City of Sarasota and Town of Surfside in Florida.

Mike Cernech - Over 17 years of local government and professional experience and is currently Deputy City Manager, City of Tamarac, Florida.

Scott Moore - Over 14 years of government experience and is currently Interim City Manager, City of Wichita, Kansas.

Florencio Pena - Over 27 years of government experience and is currently the Director of Fleet Services, City of San Antonio, Texas.

Marsha Segal-George - Over 25 years of government experience and is currently on special assignment as the Director of General Administration, City of Orlando, Florida.
